Fear grips the people of Calbayog City as criminals are again on the loose with their firearms.
Two victims were killed in two separate shooting incidents that happened in different barangays of the city's poblacion area on August 03, 2023.
At midday, between the hours of 12HN and 1PM, a female Barangay Treasurer of an island town was shot dead-on-the-spot by two still unidentified assailants.
The victim, identified as Jocelyn Cacairo Bago of Barangay Imelda, Municipality of Almagro, was shot several times in the head causing her instantaneous death.
The victim was in the company of Imelda Punong Barangay Glocer Villa and the Barangay Treasurer of Costa Rica, also of the Municipality of Almagro. The trio came from their Bookkeeper in Barangay Payahan, Calbayog City when they, using a red motorbike, decided to drop by a bakery to buy bread in Barangay Matobato.
The Punong Barangay told Calbayog police investigators that he alighted from the motorbike and was in the bakery when he heard gunshots. Turning his head towards the direction of the gunshots, he saw Bago lying on the concrete pavement and bleeding.
Unconfirmed reports tell that the victim was seen scuffling with one of the assailants. She was trying to prevent the man from grabbing her bag when the latter drew a short firearm and fired pointblank and several times at the former.
During the investigation, Punong Barangay Villa informed that after the commotion, he noticed the plastic (shopping) bag hanged in the motorbike was already missing. The shopping bag contained a black bag where an undetermined amount of barangay money was kept.
The gunman was in the company of another when they were seen fleeing from the crime scene towards the direction of the city's business area, with the backrider carrying a plastic shopping bag.

In less than 9 hours later, at about shortly past nine o’clock in the night of the same day, another victim was killed by 3 shooters who also remain unidentified as of this report.
The victim was identified as Harold Bernate y Cabrillas, male, of legal age, single, jobless and a resident of Purok 2, Barangay Obrero, Calbayog City. Bernate is popularly known in the neighborhood as “Lyntoy.”
Investigations adduce that the victim was sitting on his motorbike while parked on the side of Maharlika Highway in the vicinity of Barangay Bagacay (fronting Toyota showcase building), when the 3 (still unidentified) suspects arrived on board a red-and-white motor bicycle and started shooting, hitting the victim in several parts of his body.
Unconfirmed accounts of people in the vicinity tell that the victim, in an attempt to escape from his attackers, was seen running towards the direction of the seashore but fell on the grassy ground not far from the concrete pavement of the national highway. His assailants, however, chased him and continued to shoot him even when he was already down on his back.
No motive for the shooting of Bernate was yet established as this story is written.
The police officers conducted hot pursuit operation towards the south where the shooters were seen fleeing from the crime scene.
As this story is developed, Calbayog Journal was informed that Calbayog City Police is under a new Chief who assumed office in August 01, 2023 but was not available for interview for this incidents as he was still in the Provincial Police Office for some official matters to attend to.(CJ/JMM)
