POPE FRANCIS, the first Latin American pontiff died at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta on Monday, April 21, 2025, after 12 years in the Vatican. He was 88.
The announcement of the death Pope Francis was made by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber at the Pope’s residnce.
"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."
Another report tells that the ascertainment of the Pope’s death will take place in the chapel rather than in the room where he died. His body will immediately be place inside the coffin.

The Pope was diagnosed of bilateral pneumonia four days after he was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on February 14 for bronchitis.
The late Pope was back to his Vatican Residence to continue recovery after 38 days in hospital. He was at Sts. Peter's Basilica balcony for the Easter Celebrations on April 20, 2025.
