POLICE ENCOUNTER WITH ARMED GROUP RESULTED TO ONE DEATH, 3 WOUNDED AND 5 ARRESTED.

Calbayog City - One of 6 suspected members of an alleged gun-for-hire group in the city is confirmed killed in an encounter with police authorities while 5 other suspects were arrested and are now in the custody of Calbayog City PNP.

The confrontation happened in the morning of January 11, 2025 in Pido St., Extension, Purok 7, Barangay East Awang, Calbayog City.

Two policemen and a civilian who were reported wounded were brought to one of the hospitals in the city for immediate medical intervention.

Contrary to initial reports that 6 armed group members were killed, police reports state that only one suspect was killed while 5 others were arrested. However, no names of those arrested were obtained as of this reporting.

Killed in the operation was the suspect identified as alias “Ricky” who was also known by the names “Edgar Nayanga” or “Edgar/Nap,” of legal age and recorded as member of the Wahingon Criminal Group.

Initial reports tell that the authorities conducted an entrapment operation against the said group where a poseur buyer arranged to buy a KG9 submachine gun for an agreed amount of Php22,000.00

After the transaction, one of the suspects noticed a group of men coming towards him which made him ran towards the direction of the house of Alias Ricky. It was at this instance that gun fire from different calibre and type of firearms were heard. One civilian was hit and wounded but who was immediately evacuated and brought to a hospital.

Meanwhile, the operation to catch the suspects continued until gunshots were again heard coming from the suspects. This prompted the authorities to fire back towards the direction of the suspects.

Two of the police officers were hit and wounded during the exchange of fire. Both were transported to the hospital.

One of the suspects, identified as Alyas Ricky was also found wounded inside the house prompting the authorities to also bring him to the hospital. Said suspect, however, was pronounced dead-on-arrival.

In a press release, Samar Police Provincial Director, PCol. Antonietto Eric Mendoza assured that the operation was legitimate as approved with protocols in place.

“I would like to personally assure the public that the operation carried was legitimate and approved by my office. Our law enforcement teams followed all necessary protocols in carrying out this operation,” the Provincial Director said in the press release.

Moreover, it was emphasized that the primary concern of the PNP is the safety of public with officers fully committed to ensuring peace and security by continuing to work diligently in upholding the law.(CJ/JMM)
