CALBAYOG CITY – One was killed while another was wounded in a shooting incident along Pido Street Extension, Barangay East Awang, this city, at around half past nine o’clock in the night of December 25, 2023.
The victim identified as Alfredo Casimero was shot dead-on-the spot. He sustained several gunshot wounds in the head and the different parts of his body. He was 46 years old and an employee of the City Veterinary Office.
The other victim is 19-year old, Daniel Romano, Jr.was hit by 2 bullets – one on his abdomen and the other on his left lap.
Both of the victims are residents of Purok 7 of the said barangay.
Ground information says that Romano along with friends were seated on a wooden bench by the side of the makeshift fish market in the area while Casimiro was standing back-to-back with them when armed and masked men suddenly appeared.
Gunshots were heard making the group on the bench scampered away except for Romano who was left behind then managed to escape but was still fired upon. Casimero was seen lying flat on the ground.
The gunmen were seen fleeing to the south direction towards the diversion road.
Meanwhile, Romano reached home to tell his mother he was shot. Their house is located along the road which is a few meters away from where the incident happened. A motor tricycle (locally known as “timbol”) sped him to the hospital.
The attending medical team required immediate surgery on the gunshot wounds sustained by Romano.
While SOCO conducted examinations at the scene of the crime, hot pursuit operation against the perpetrators was immediately conducted by Calbayog PNP team.
THE MORNING AFTER THE SURGERY
“We fear for our lives here at the hospital because the criminals may come after my son and finish him off,” Ailyn Maghacot (mother of Romano) told Calbayog Journal.
“The assurance of the police that they are just a call away does not ease us from fear for our security,” Maghacot added.
Calbayog Journal was informed that Romano was immobilized when a barrel of a gun was pointed at him by one of the gunmen. However, Romano who was then feeling a degree of pain on his lap, still strove and managed to run away but was again fired upon during his escape.
“I was on my phone when the gunmen arrived so I did not notice they were carrying firearms until a I saw a gun pointed at my lap and deafening gunshots rang out,” Romano recalled.
One of the bullets went through one side and exited at the other side of Romano’s abdomen. The bullet on his lap also went through and through.
“There is no way I can recognized any of the gunmen because they wore dark clothes,” Romano told and added that “their faces, except for their eyes, were covered with dark masks.”
Maghacot keeps her hopes high for his son’s fast recovery so they can be allowed home where she can take care and keep her son safe.(CJ/JMM)
