Completion of an improvement project inside the city hall compound of Calbayog City that includes the “The Rectangle” will keep conduct of Flag and other ceremonies of the city government away from the main street of the city.
The city government held its first Flag Raising Ceremony at the “Rectangle” inside the city hall compound last June 03, 2024 (first Monday of the month) when the P5M project was inaugurated.
City Mayor Raymund C. Uy, during an interview, expressed his thanks for the support of city government planners, financial managers and legislators in the fruition of a project that will make the city government a role model in its campaign against obstruction of traffic.

City Mayor Raymund C. Uy, during an interview, expressed his thanks for the support of city government planners, financial managers and legislators in the fruition of a project that will make the city government a role model in its campaign against obstruction of traffic.
“After several decades of having to close part of the Jose Avelino St. for Monday Flag Raising and Friday Flag Lowering ceremonies and other LGU events, the city government has now an area it can call its own inside the city hall compound that will accommodate the conduct of such activities without causing disturbance to the flow of traffic in that street,” Mayor Uy said.
During Monday’s (June 03, 2024) Flag Raising Ceremony, Vice Mayor Rex Daguman described the inauguration of the project as a celebration reflecting the collective effort for the development of the city geared towards a brighter future.
The Rectangle with an elevated and roofed platform (or a stage) at the center (in one of the sides) on which speakers or partakers will perform is part of the 5 million-peso project implemented by the city government during the first quarter of 2024.

“Funded from the city’s development fund, the P5M project cost includes the demolition of a building (that formerly housed the City Budget Office and the Bids and Awards Committee conference room), construction of the flag pole and plant boxes, concrete flooring as well as the relocation and construction/improvement of platforms for the Japanese (Apology) Marker and the statue of Jose D. Avelino,” City Engineer Albana informed.
The statue of Jose Avelino, the first Philippine Senate President and father of Calbayog cityhood, as well as the Japanese (Apology) Marker are both included in the tourism package of the city government dubbed as the "Calbayog Heritage Walk."

Moreover, Mayor Uy, in the interview, also cited the development endeavors that the city government has implemented - accomplished, on-going and those in the pipeline of implementation within the year 2024 - that may appear small things but which have great impact on the lives of Calbayognons and other people in terms of peace, security and safety.
“In line for immediate implementation also is our plan of providing an office for the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office with a command center duly equipped with the necessary implements for a more effective delivery of direction and services,” the City Mayor added.
“Other development projects this administration has implemented may not be visible in the city proper, but if we visit areas such as Migara, and in Oquendo (left river area),” Mayor Uy explained and added that “improvement of Nijaga Park, Sacred Heart Plaza, concreting/repair/filling of potholes of roads in priority areas in the city proper, particularly the bridge approach in Barangay Payahan, to name a few.”

Also mentioned, during the interview, is the widespread installation of street lights that has now reached as far as Barangay Matobato, extended farther to Barangay Cagsalaosao, crossings and diversion roads seen most helpful to the safety of night motorists and pedestrians.
Mayor Uy expressed his never-ending thanks to Calbayognons for giving him the opportunity to lead in working for the development of Calbayog City and further asks for the continued support to his administration without neglect to the welfare of respective families.(CJ/JMM)
