A magnitude 5.7 earthquake felt at 11:39 AM, Monday, August 19, 2024 was reported to have struck the waters off Northern Samar hitting 34 kilometers north of the Municipality of Pambujan.
The earthquake was downgraded to magnitude 5.7 after it was first reported by Phivolcs at 6.0. Aftershocks are expected.
This was followed by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake some 29 kilometers north of the municipality of Pambujan as reported in another advisory issued several minutes after.

NO TSUNAMI ALERT: Having seen "no rupture and physical movement of the waters along the coastlines affected by the magnitude 5.7 earthquake," Northern Samar Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) posted that there was no danger of a tsunami within the area.
DAMAGE: Mang Inasal branch housed at Gaisano Grand Mall in Catarman, Northern Samar incurred damage when one panel of its glass wall was seen shattered to pieces caused by the earthquake. While assessment as to cost of damages was not available as of this report, Franchisee Dave Murjani informed that his employees and the customers who were caught inside the food chain were safe with no reported injuries.
SUSPENSION OF CLASSES: The municipal government of Catarman, Northern Samar suspended face-to-face classes in all levels in both private and public schools for the day. Mayor Francisco Rosales, Jr. Issued Executive Order No. 036, dated August 19, 2024.(CJ/JMM)
