Residents by Gandara River, in the vicinity of Barangay Minda, Gandara, Samar expressed relief from frequent flooding and subsequent riverbank erosion caused by overflowing of Gandara River during rainy season with the completion of a flood control structure implemented by Samar First District Engineering Office (SFDEO).
“We are very thankful for the flood structure because it will protect us from flooding of our community when river water rises due to rain. It will also prevent erosion of the riverbank,” said Anita Evasco, one of the residents in the community by the riverbank.
Gandara River is one of the major rivers cruising along barangays in Samar. It may be a source of livelihood and home to many but it’s also the cause of inundation in communities living along it, thus, hazardous to lives and properties.
Another resident who requested not to be named said, “Gandara River is a source of our livelihood and for which reasons we have built our houses by the riverbank.”
“With the flood structure already in place, we will be alleviated from the frequent repair that our house requires every after flooding and/or riverbank erosion because such disasters cause house damage that needs repair or rehabilitation so we can have even a modest livable shelter,” a senior citizen of the area said.

“The flood control structure is one of the core projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways funded for Php40.6M in the budget year 2024,” District Engineer Raulito Yangzon informed Calbayog Journal.
“It is 200 meters long with a height of 3 meters while the side walk which is part of the project has width of 1 meter that runs through the length of the flood control structure, sidelighted with a parapet to ensure that no one or nothing falls,” DE Yangzon added.
The recently completed flood control will help re-direct river water flow, slow natural changes in embankments and riverbanks and lessen flooding in the area making lesser challenges to the residents in terms of risks during calamities. As it will also lessen expenses on house repairs, money derived from livelihood will also be redirected to other expenses such as school needs of children, presentable clothes and regular nutritious food on the table.(CJ/pagm/JMM)
