Calbayog City - A fire broke out early morning of December 18, 2023 in a residential area, Purok 1 of Barangay Trinidad, a village some 6 kilometers north of the city’s commercial area.
The fire that lasted for less than an hour razed 2 residential houses (1 two-storey and a one-storey) and partially burned 2 occupancies (1 two-storey and a one-storey) reaching an estimated cost of damages to Php694,400.00. Three people were injured in the incident.
Initial report of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) – Calbayog City Station, adduced that the fire originated at the southern portion of the second storey of the ancestral house owned by the family of Cirilo Bongoyan.

BFP-Calbayog in its initial report described the Bongoyan residence as “a two-storey old ancestral house made mostly of wooden materials for its second floor while the ground floor was made of concrete materials. Galvanized Iron materials was used for its roofing.
“The ancestral house was made mostly of wooden materials for its trusses, columns, walls and beams on the second floor. The family chose to preserve the said ancestral house for quite a long time thereby making it one of the oldest houses in Barangay Trinidad,” Bongoyan told BFP Investigators.
The other totally burnt house is owned by Mrs. Norma Pandong but was occupied by Elena Montes and her family at the time of the fire incident. The one-storey house was made mostly of light materials such as the typical old houses made of hard wood.

Identified as partially damaged houses in this fire incident are owned by Iluminada Abon (two-storey house) and Rosario Baloca (one-storey dwelling).
Three (3) people were reported injured in this fire incident. Natividad Petto sustained second degree burns on her right arm while Evangeline Bongoyan suffered a second degree burn of her left arm and a first degree burn on her right arm.
Neri Javate was found to have first degree burns on her left arm, second degree burns on her right arm, 2nd degree burn on the 4th and 5th digits of the right hand.

The first 2 firetrucks that were dispatched from Calbayog City Station arrived at the scene finding an already fully developed fire reaching the first alarm level needing firetrucks from Oquendo and Tinambacan Substations to be dispatched.
From the time of call at 5:34 AM, it took the firefighters 41 minutes and consumed 46,000 gallons of water to put the fire out.(CJ/JMM)
