An alleged member of a criminal group was killed in a gun buy-bust operations at midday of Monday, June 24, 2024 in Sitio Tigbe, Barangay Capoocan, Calbayog City.
The fatality was identified as John Elvis Magbutay Estinopo, alias “Janjan,” single, jobless, a resident of Barangay Hamorawon, Calbayog City, and an alleged member of the Magbutay Criminal Gang.
Reportedly, Estinopo was subject of a gun buy-bust operations by police authorities following information that he was selling firearms.
Estinopo and a poseur-buyer agreed to meet in Sitio Tigbe for negotiation. During the exchange, however, the subject detected that he was dealing with police authorities making him immediately drew a gun and fired. This prompted the government operatives to fire back at him.
The subject sustained several gunshot wounds in the different parts of his body and was declared dead at the hospital where he was immediately taken.
No injuries were reported on the part of the government authorities composed of the Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit of the Samar Police Provincial Office (PDEU-SPPO), Calbayog Police Station, and members of the Samar First PNP Mobile Force Company (SFPMFC).
Meanwhile, a family member, during an interview, told that the subject has been advised against going out of the house since early part of June 2024.
“We told him to stay in the house since we have been hearing talks that he was subject of a police manhunt,” a female relative said who also informed that she did not know about the gun-selling activity of her nephew.

It can be recalled that, Estinopo, who is popularly known as Janjan Magbutay, is facing criminal cases, being one of the 3 accused, for the death of a lady school teacher and her beau in 2022. He surrendered to authorities where he confessed having participation in the crime. He was in the company of his mother and assistance of a social worker during the confession being a minor at that time.
Magbutay Criminal Gang, where Estinopo is identified as member, is allegedly a notorious crime group based in Calbayog City. The group is involved in several criminal activities. According to reports, its members are known to operate as gun-for-hire.(CJ/JMM).
